In any line carrying bulk material, the pipe is the component that wears out fastest. The aggregate, ore, or scrap flowing through it constantly abrades the wall, and especially at elbow sections, this wear can progress all the way to a hole. Why Is Hardox Pipe Needed?

In sectors such as heavy industry, mining, construction, and transport, pipes are constantly exposed to abrasion, impact, and heavy loading. Standard pipe wears out quickly under these conditions, leading to holes, line downtime, and unplanned maintenance.

Hardox is a wear-resistant steel produced by SSAB of Sweden. Because it combines high hardness with high toughness, it resists both abrasive wear and impact. Pipe manufactured from this steel offers a far longer service life than pipe made from conventional steel.

The Real Manufacturing Challenge: Rolling

The difficulty with Hardox pipe lies not in the material itself but in forming it. Its high yield strength means cylinder rolling requires significantly more tonnage than standard steel. More importantly, springback is noticeably greater: once the rolling force is released, the plate springs back much further than standard steel, and if this is not compensated for, the target diameter will not be met.

The second critical factor is minimum bend radius. For Hardox, this limit is significantly larger than for standard steel; going below it causes cracking on the outer surface. This means not every pipe diameter can be produced in every Hardox grade — diameter, thickness, and hardness grade must be evaluated together.

The longitudinal weld seam is also the most sensitive point on the pipe. If preheating and heat input are not controlled correctly, the seam area fatigues faster than the base material and becomes the weak link in the line.

  • Plate Cutting: The flat pattern is calculated and the plate is cut to size using thermal cutting methods.
  • Cylinder Rolling: Pre-bending removes the flat section at the plate edges, and springback is calibrated with a trial roll.
  • Longitudinal Welding: Preheating is applied, heat input is logged, and the seam is welded by certified welders.
  • Dimensional and Roundness Inspection: Diameter and roundness tolerance are verified against a template.
  • Flange and Connection Fabrication: Any connection elements the line requires are manufactured and fitted at the same facility.

Managing all of these steps under one roof is what makes the real difference here: the hardness of the cut edge affects the rolling operation, and the stress induced during rolling affects the weld. Keeping the entire chain within a single facility is what ensures Hardox's advantage is preserved all the way through to the finished pipe.

To be candid, not every line needs Hardox. Using Hardox on a line that carries a non-abrasive fluid is an unnecessary cost — standard pipe is perfectly adequate there. Hardox makes sense where wear creates a measurable cost in downtime and maintenance.

The right approach is often not to build the entire line from Hardox, but to apply it only to the sections where wear is concentrated — elbows, transfer points, and impact zones. This captures most of the service-life gain for a small fraction of the cost.
