Hardox is a high-strength wear-resistant steel produced by Sweden's SSAB, known for its exceptional resistance to abrasion. Through specialized heat treatment, it gains both high hardness and sufficient toughness at the same time.
This combination is exactly what a bucket needs. A bucket is subjected to two different kinds of wear simultaneously: continuous friction (abrasion) and sudden impact. A steel that is only hard will crack under impact; a steel that is only tough will wear away quickly. Hardox delivers both properties at once.
On conventional buckets, abrasion, scratching, and impact-induced deformation gradually bring the part to the end of its service life, meaning frequent maintenance and replacement. On a hardox bucket, wear slows down markedly, even when working with hard rock, aggregate, or ore.

Choosing the Right Hardness Grade
Fitting every bucket with the hardest available Hardox grade is not the right approach. As hardness increases, wear life extends, but the material becomes harder to work and cost rises. The right grade is chosen based on the abrasiveness of the material being handled, the severity of impact, and how frequently the equipment operates.
Not every part of the bucket experiences the same wear, either. The cutting edge and floor wear far more than the side walls. For this reason, using different hardness grades or thicknesses in different zones of the bucket optimizes both service life and cost on most projects.

Every bucket project is treated as its own engineering study at DMK Makina. Design and material grade are determined based on the type of material being handled, how frequently the equipment operates, the machine's capacity, and the mounting geometry.
Bucket geometry determines not only durability but also fill efficiency. A bucket designed with the wrong angle will consistently under-fill, even if it is durable, raising the cost per operating cycle. Reinforcement points, wear plates, and connection components are also calculated as part of this overall design.
The Critical Point in Production: Processing Quality
Hardox's advantage comes not from the material alone, but from processing it without compromising that advantage. Three stages are decisive in bucket production:
Cutting: Due to its high hardness, thermal cutting methods are used; the hardened zone that forms at the cut edge is accounted for in the subsequent stages.
Rolling/Bending: The high yield strength requires significantly more tonnage; failing to respect the minimum bend radius causes cracking on the outer surface.
Welding: This is the most critical stage. If preheating, low-hydrogen electrodes, and heat input control are not applied correctly, cold cracks can appear days after welding is complete — on a bucket, this means a sudden failure out in the field.
