As a general rule, the V-opening should be about 6 to 8 times the material thickness. For example, a 12-16 mm V-opening is suitable for 2 mm sheet, while for 6 mm sheet this range rises to 36-48 mm. Straying outside this ratio can cause two different problems:
- Too narrow a V-opening: the material is overstressed, cracking risk increases at the bend zone, and bending force rises excessively.
- Too wide a V-opening: the bend angle fails to reach the target value, the inside bend radius ends up larger than expected, and part tolerances are compromised.

V-opening selection should account not only for thickness but also for material type. For harder, more elastic materials like stainless steel, a slightly wider V-opening than for mild steel of the same thickness can reduce stress on the material. For softer materials like aluminum, narrower V-openings allow sharper bend radii, though care must be taken against cracking risk.
