Since there's no heat input, there's also no risk of thermal deformation or discoloration at the cut edge.

Advantages of Laser Cutting

Laser cutting is a much more flexible solution than guillotine when it comes to complex geometries, holes, and internal cuts. Cut edge quality is also generally higher, making it preferred for tight-tolerance parts.

Choosing a Method by Thickness

Thin Sheet (1-3 mm)

In this thickness range, both methods can deliver effective results. However, if the part is purely straight-edged and simple in geometry, guillotine cutting offers a cost advantage. For parts requiring complex geometry or holes, laser cutting should be preferred.

Medium Thickness (3-8 mm)

While guillotine cutting still works efficiently in this range, a slight slope can appear at the cut edge (the cut surface not being fully perpendicular). For projects where edge quality is critical, laser cutting delivers more consistent results.

Thick Sheet (8 mm and above)

Guillotine machine capacity can become limited on thick material; at these thicknesses, laser cutting (or plasma/oxygen cutting depending on thickness) becomes a more suitable option. Guillotine cutting on thick material can also cause more noticeable deformation.

Evaluating by Production Volume

For high-volume, repetitive straight cutting needs (such as dividing standard plate sizes), guillotine cutting stands out for its speed and cost advantage. For low-to-medium volume projects with varied geometries, laser cutting's flexibility becomes more valuable.

Choosing by Edge Quality Requirements

For parts requiring pre-weld preparation or where visual surface quality matters, laser cutting's smoother, more consistent edge quality should be preferred. For parts that will be further processed or won't be visible, guillotine cutting may be sufficient.
