Both methods are used to form sheet and profile, but they produce completely different geometries. Choosing the right method affects both cost and part quality. The Basic Difference: Continuous Curve or Sharp Corner?

The simplest way to tell them apart: cylinder rolling produces a continuous, smooth curve (a circle, cylinder, or cone), while press brake bending produces a sharp, angular corner along a defined line (a V-bend). In other words, one rounds the material, the other folds it.

When Is Cylinder Rolling Used?

Cylinder rolling works by passing the plate progressively through a set of rolls until it curves to the required shape. It is the preferred method for:

  • Tank, silo, and pressure vessel shells
  • Pipes and large-diameter sleeves
  • Conical transitions and circular cross-section structures

When Is Press Brake Bending Used?

Press brake bending forms a sharp corner by pressing the plate with a punch into a die (V-channel). It is the preferred method for:

  • Angular forms such as boxes, enclosures, and panels
  • Profiles, angle brackets, and connection parts
  • Electrical cabinets, housings, and chassis
