In the metalworking industry, moving beyond standard solutions and bringing original designs to life requires custom sheet metal fabrication. When there is no ready-made part to select from a catalog, production is built directly around the customer's drawing and requirements. At DMK Makina, we manage this process from the design stage through to delivery at our production facility in Lüleburgaz.
When Is Custom Sheet Metal Fabrication Needed?
Standard sheet metal products don't always fully meet the requirements of a specific project. In these cases, custom fabrication comes into play and offers the following advantages:
- Original Design: Sheet metal parts shaped entirely around the customer's design and needs.
- High Precision: Suitable for applications where tolerances are critical.
- Material Selection: The ability to choose the material best suited to the project's requirements (carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, wear-resistant steel, etc.).
- Functionality: Parts designed and produced to serve a specific purpose.
- Optimization: Solutions balanced for weight, durability and cost.
Project Stages
The custom sheet metal fabrication process generally consists of the following stages:
- Needs Analysis and Design: The customer's needs and design requirements are analyzed in detail. If there is no drawing, or if it isn't production-ready, design support is provided.
- Manufacturability Review: We check whether the geometry in the drawing can actually be produced with the selected methods; minimum hole diameter, internal corner radii and bend clearances are all reviewed.
- Material Selection: Material is determined by weighing strength, weight, corrosion resistance and cost criteria together.
- Prototype Production: A sample part is produced to validate the design and identify any potential issues; springback and tolerance values are calibrated at this stage.
- Series Production: Once the prototype is approved, series production begins. Quality control is applied rigorously throughout the production process.
- Surface Treatments: Blasting, primer and paint are applied where required.
- Delivery: Products are properly packaged and delivered on time.
Why Does the Process Start With the Drawing?
The most common delay in custom fabrication doesn't come from the machine — it comes from the file. A file with an open contour, overlapping lines, or an unclear scale becomes unproducible once it's loaded into the cutting software. That's why a healthy process starts with checking the technical drawing.
Which Methods Come Into Play?
A custom part is often produced not through a single method, but through several processes applied in sequence:
- Cutting: Fiber laser, plasma, oxy-fuel or guillotine, depending on geometry and thickness.
- Bending: Press brake, cylinder rolling or profile bending to create the three-dimensional form.
- Joining: Welded fabrication carried out by certified welders.
- Surface Protection: Blasting, primer and topcoat paint.
It's important to remember that these stages affect one another: the hardness of the cut edge affects the weld, and the heat from welding affects the final dimensions. This is why method selection is made not on a part-by-part basis, but with the whole process in mind.
Areas of Use
Custom sheet metal fabrication is used across a wide variety of sectors:
- Machine Manufacturing: Machine bodies, protective enclosures, chassis.
- Automotive and Supporting Industry: Custom parts, prototype development, connection elements.
- Energy and Electronics: Control panel cabinets, server enclosures, support systems.
- Steel Structures and Construction: Custom facade cladding, connection plates, structural elements.
- Heavy Industry: Wear parts, bunker and chute linings.
